EDWARDS SANBORN SOLAR AND ENERGY STORAGE PROJECT

CAPACITY: 864MWDC LOCATION: KERN COUNTY, CALIFORNIA COMPLETED: 2023 DEVELOPER: TERRA-GEN
The Edwards Sanborn project combines 864MWdc of solar generation with an extraordinary 3,320MWh battery energy storage system, making it one of the largest integrated solar and storage facilities ever built. The site spans more than 4,660 acres of the Mojave Desert in Kern County, California.
It is considered the largest publicprivate partnership in the history of the US Department of Defense because it partly sits on land leased from the Edwards Air Force Base, from which it takes its name. It was developed by Terra-Gen and built by contractor Mortenson in under four years, becoming fully operational in January 2024 after construction began at the end of 2020.
In terms of hardware, it is composed of close to two million solar panels and more than 120,000 lithium-ion battery modules. The site’ s enormous battery installation allows electricity generated during sunny periods to be stored and released later in the day, which helps bolster the reliability of the local grid.
