CHALLENGES IN PERSUADING AND ASSISTING SUPPLIERS TO SHARE THEIR EMISSION DATA IN PURSUIT OF A GREENER SUPPLY CHAIN
In light of the increasing emphasis on reporting Scope 3 emissions , a number of obstacles arise . As Rade explains , these challenges can be categorised into two primary categories :
• Deer in headlights : Often companies that are smaller or privately held , these are being asked by their largest and most important customers to submit relatively rigorous emissions data and in some cases pursue ambitious climate goals , like setting a science-based target . The primary obstacle here is unfamiliarity with carbon accounting , especially Scope 3 categories , and insecurity in what is permissible . For example , when it ’ s acceptable to estimate or use proxy data instead of primary data .
• Data challenged : Where much of Sustain . Life ’ s user base falls , these companies are characterised as those more informed that have some experience with emissions inventories , but struggle with data acquisition , consistency and quality .
She adds : “ Our goal at Sustain . Life is to enable these companies to build their own capacity , and our platform provides complete transparency into every calculation methodology and line item output , so companies not only have data , but understand what it does and does not represent ”.
