SUSTAINABILITY
The sustainability pillar Sustainability is another key element of the KPMG Trusted AI Framework .
“ One of the big questions is – are you building AI in a sustainable way ? When you build your AI solutions , you have a responsibility to take into account the sustainability design ,” David says .
Data centres that run AI are using as much energy as the airline and air freight sector , and there is a new data centre being built every three days . The infrastructure is incredibly energy intensive and uses large amounts of water for cooling .
“ Not all of it ’ s negative though ,” David says . “ In Edinburgh they ’ re building an extra scale supercomputer with water in a closed loop . As the hot water is cooled , it will be pumped into the disused coal field underneath the data centre which will have a ground source heat pump to heat the 6,000 homes above in an incredibly effective way .”
In this instance , AI is being used to mitigate its own inefficiencies . Data is essential in understanding how to boost sustainability and AI can make that data management far more efficient and quick .
“ At KPMG , we are supporting our clients with this idea of smart people organising the data , which has all sorts of benefits in sustainability and beyond – lower risk , better performance , lower cost . In sustainable use of AI using your understanding of the business problem , we ’ re trying to get to great ideas and then narrowing down the technology so that it ’ s using much less .”
