France’ s low carbon intensity – just 41 gCO₂ per kWh – is the product of a decades-long commitment to nuclear energy, which today makes up the lion’ s share of its energy mix. Its use of conventional renewables is modest in comparison, at 16.2 %, but France’ s economic efficiency( only 0.86 kWh needed per US $ 1 of GDP) and its exceptionally clean grid make it the standout of Western Europe’ s larger economies.
