RECORD DROUGHTS IN ROMANIA AND HUNGARY FORCE NUCLEAR SHUTDOWNS
One of nuclear energy’ s most compelling selling points has always been its reliability. That reputation has been tested by the extreme weather across Europe this month. Heatwaves and droughts across Central Europe have left the Danube’ s waterline at record lows and many nuclear power stations unable to pipe the water they need to cool their reactors. The Paks plant in Hungary and the Cernavodă plant in Romania were both closed in August as a result, casting doubt over the region’ s energy security.
