BAHRAIN WORLD TRADE CENTER
TOP 10 – SMART BUILDINGS

BAHRAIN WORLD TRADE CENTER

LOCATION: MANAMA, BAHRAIN COMPLETED: 2008 DEVELOPER: AWAL HOTELING
NOTABLE FEATURE: THREE 225KW WIND TURBINES SLUNG BETWEEN THE TWIN TOWERS
Shaped like two sails to funnel Gulf breezes towards its rotors, Bahrain’ s World Trade Center was the first skyscraper anywhere to integrate large-scale wind turbines into its structure. Today, the three turbines – each spanning 29 metres – can supply 15 % of the complex’ s electricity needs.
Awal Hoteling developed the building concept at a cost of US $ 150m and, nearly two decades later, the Bahrain World Trade Centre remains a rare and striking example of passive, built-in clean power generation.
