TAIPEI 101
LOCATION: TAIPEI, TAIWAN COMPLETED: 2004
DEVELOPER: TAIPEI FINANCIAL CENTER CORPORATION
NOTABLE FEATURE: LEED PLATINUM CERTIFICATION ALONGSIDE ITS FAMOUS TUNED MASS DAMPER
Before the Burj Khalifa was finished in 2010, Taipei 101 was the tallest building the world had ever seen. Just a year after losing that title, though, it became the world’ s tallest truly green building, earning its LEED Platinum certification in 2011. Its sustainable specifications include energy-efficient lighting, low-flow water fixtures and a smart management system that can optimise power performance across its 101 floors.
Perhaps most impressive of all is its giant pendulum damper, a 660-tonne steel sphere that protects the skyscraper from earthquakes and typhoons. WATCH NOW
