Bobby Hollis, who served as Vice President of Energy at Microsoft until May this year, said at the time:“ As Microsoft continues its path to become a carbon negative company, this agreement brings a significant supply of new, reliable, carbon-free electricity back to the PJM power grid.”
Pennsylvania’ s Governor Josh Shapiro was similarly enthusiastic, describing a project that would safely reuse existing infrastructure.
“ This restart will safely take advantage of existing infrastructure while creating thousands of energy jobs and strengthening Pennsylvania’ s legacy as a national energy leader,” he said.

Google’ s revival of a shuttered Iowa plant Google has taken a similar approach in the Midwest, partnering with NextEra Energy to revive the Duane Arnold Energy Center near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a 615MW plant that closed its doors in 2020. The company has signed up to a 25-year power purchase agreement that will see it take the bulk of the plant’ s output when it resumes generation in early 2029.
