In 2005 , Wal-mart CEO Lee Scott set three bold goals : to be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy , to create zero waste , to sell products that sustain our resources and environment .

Currently , 26 percent of Wal-mart ’ s electricity globally is supplied by renewable energy , though amounts differ from country to country — more than 60 percent in Mexico , for example , though only 14 percent in the United States . For waste , Wal-mart diverted 82.4 percent of

its waste in the United States in 2014 across stores , clubs , distribution centers and other facilities . Outside the U . S . it achieved 68 percent waste diversion . The company says it ’ s on target to eliminate all landfill waste from U . S . Wal-mart and Sam ’ s Club locations by 2025 ; globally , it will take a little longer .

In addition , the company announced it had eliminated 28.2 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2015 from its global supply chain , the equivalent of the emissions of nearly 6 million cars over a year .
