EDF ( Électricité de France ) is the world ’ s largest producer of electricity . The company has over 120,000 MW of generation capacity in Europe , South America , North America , Asia , the Middle East and Africa . EDF was founded in 1946 as a result of the nationalization of 1,700 energy producers , transporters and distributors by French Minister of Industrial Production Marcel Paul . The company ’ s operations include electricity generation and distribution ; power plant design , construction and dismantling ; transport and energy trading . It is active in power generation technologies that include hydropower , nuclear power , wind power , marine energies , solar energy , biomass , geothermal energy and fossilfired energy . Henri Proglio was appointed as chairman and CEO of EDF in 2009 , and the company currently ranks in at number fifty on Forbes ’ Global 2000 list . The company pledged its commitment to fight climate change in a vow to reduce its carbon footprint by reducing its CO2 emissions in France by 50 percent by 2016 . This amounts to a reduction of 12 million tons of CO2 over a 26-year period . The goal was set as a result of a voluntary industrial policy implemented by EDF in France and the entire group internationally . The French division attests to producing electricity that is 96 percent free of CO2 emissions and emits 10 times less per kWh than the European average . Additionally , EDF is currently strategizing how to honor French President Francois Hollande ’ s pledge to lower the county ’ s proportion of atomic power with the goal of reducing nuclear dependence to 50 percent by 2025 .
