The ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline has graphically exposed the cybersecurity dangers that exist for all energy and infrastructure companies . The US pipeline carries 2.5 million barrels a day — 45 % of the East Coast ' s supply of diesel , petrol and jet fuel .

Malicious cyber actors deployed Darkside ransomware against the pipeline company ’ s IT network , although at this time , there is no indication that the entity ’ s operational technology networks , according to The Cybersecurity and Information Security Agency ( CISA ).
