3 . Actionable forecasts and risks As a result of climate change , instances of severe and extreme weather are increasing . By combining state-of-the-art ensemble weather forecasting products with novel statistical post-processing , Predict4Resilience will produce actionable forecasts of extreme weather , specific network faults and risks up to two weeks ahead – doubling the current forecasting range , effectively saving the operational costs of network companies and reducing the potential outage time for customers .
The SIF initiative was launched in 2021 by energy industry regulator Ofgem and Innovation UK , with the purpose being to find and fund ambitious , innovative projects possessing the potential to accelerate net-zero transition across the electricity and gas sectors .
The nine SP Energy Networks projects are focused on areas critical to achieving the UK ’ s ambitious zero emissions targets – from the decarbonisation of heat , where the network operator sees a real opportunity to both minimise the need for upgrading the network while reducing domestic reliance on fossil fuels for heating , to exploring the use of hydrogen and electrification solutions to enable cost effective rail travel .
SP Energy Networks has also committed to finding new ways to reuse or recycle assets with other industries to reduce what they send to landfill , and is building on its past innovation project successes by looking at how we can use Distributed Energy Resources ( such as solar PV or battery storage ) as a means of enhancing the stability of the electricity network . energydigital . com 39
