The details of the Kraaken The fundamental purpose for the Blue Economy VITAL 100MW Kraaken( henceforth just Kraaken) is to deliver power and water to shore, all while operating as a data centre.
Optimal Transit’ s concept suggests the vessel could export a continuous stream of up to 40MW of self-produced electricity, while it could also produce around 30 million litres of fresh water daily using a process called vacuum-flash desalination. The companies also say that, because the Kraaken is a ship, it would be able to move away from or towards danger as conditions demand, making it a particularly unique method of delivering disaster relief.
Then, of course, there is the data centre element of the project. The plans for the project suggest that around 60MW of capacity would be available for AI and data centre workloads.
The initial plans for the Kraaken were entirely focused on data centre capacity.“ Artificial intelligence is creating unprecedented demand for power, water and land,” said Scott Myers, President of Optimal Transit, when the first iteration was announced this summer.
“ Kraaken takes a fundamentally different approach by moving data center infrastructure offshore and using proven marine engineering together with our patented Digital Ocean Thermal technology to produce continuous electrical power.”
It is only the latest designs that brought the energy and water relief aspect into the equation. So – why the pivot?
