However, that long drought will soon be over. Three new Scottish projects – Loch Kemp, Coire Glas and Earba – have been approved, while reports suggest that many more are currently in the pipeline across Scotland and Wales, representing a combined capacity of around 10GW, according to the British Hydropower Association. SSE Renewables’ s Coire Glas scheme on Loch Lochy is perhaps the most advanced of these projects and is slated to add up to 1.5GW of capacity to the UK grid.
