Modernised grids and long-duration energy storage will reduce reliance on carbon intensive fossil fuels and enable much higher shares of renewable energy.
But they will complement, rather than replace, thermal power. Every resilient electricity system will continue to need dispatchable generation to provide flexibility, stability and security of supply.
The role of thermal power will evolve. Advanced gas turbines can start within minutes, ramp up output quickly and increasingly operate on lower-carbon fuels such as hydrogen.
