PHEVs and Smart Grids Smart grid technology also has a future in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ( PHEVs ). A ‘ Technology Roadmap ” report on smart grids by the International Energy Agency proposed how smart grids can conserve additional energy through the use of PHEVs —“ Smart grid technology can enable charging to be carried out more strategically , when demand is low , making use of both low-cost generation and extra system capacity , or when the production of electricity from renewable sources is high . Over the long term , smart grid technology could also enable electric vehicles to feed electricity stored in their batteries back into the system when needed .”
This system is called Vehicle-to- Grid ( V2G ) and is being developed internationally . The University of Delaware currently has a V2G team headed by Dr . Willett Kempton that has been conducting research since 2011 . The team ’ s goals are to provide education through an investigative study on the environmental and
